Growth factors are naturally occurring signaling proteins in our bodies that play a crucial role in supporting the skin's natural repair and regeneration capabilities, improving skin density, and enhancing overall skin health. In skincare products, growth factors are used to promote skin renewal, improve elasticity, reduce wrinkles, and enhance overall skin health. As we age, our skin's ability to naturally produce growth factors declines. Production declines rapidly after the mid-twenties, and significantly during menopause. The result is a slower rate of cell renewal and repair, ultimately affecting our appearance—skin begins to sag, and fine lines and wrinkles appear. To combat these visible signs of aging, scientists at BIOEFFECT have developed a method for producing replicas of human growth factors in barley using cutting-edge biotechnology, with EGF (epidermal growth factor) as a key ingredient.

Iceland also has extremely active geothermal activity, allowing us to grow barley plants—the hosts of our growth factors—year-round in greenhouses. The greenhouses are powered by sustainable geothermal energy, and the plants are irrigated with Icelandic water, one of the purest water sources in the world.
